Glen Cove Holds Annual Reorganization Meeting
District swears in 2022-23 Board of Education, begins plans for new school year
GLEN COVE, NEW YORK (JULY 2022) — The Glen Cove School District held its annual reorganization meeting on July 6, at which time the Board elected its President and Vice President for the 2022-2023 school year and newly elected Board member Audre Lynn Hurston James was sworn in for her first term as a Trustee.
Maria Elena Venuto, who served as the Board’s Vice President in the 2021-2022 school year, was elected by the Board as its Board President for the 2022-2023 school year. Dr. Angela Raimo was elected by Board members to serve as their Vice President in the current school year. Lia Leone, who was the Board’s previous President and won re-election to the Board this past May, could not be in attendance, but will be sworn in for her new term by District Clerk Ida Johnson.
“I couldn’t be more confident going into a new year with this dedicated and passionate group of people. Although it is summer, we are officially in the 2022-23 school year and already preparing for a monumental year come September,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Maria Rianna.
The reorganization meeting was also the first for new administrators in their roles, including Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction & Technology Alexa Doeschner and Assistant Superintendent of Human Relations Unal Karakas. Dr. Maria Rianna also welcomed Kristen Schaefer as English Language Arts Coordinator and Victoria Schilling as Science Coordinator.
Among the topics discussed at the meeting was the introduction of a student representative serving on the Board of Education. The creation of such a position was approved by voters during the budget vote in May and aims to represent the student perspective at Board of Education meetings. As of now, the Senior Class President will fill this role.
The district wishes a warm welcome to all Board of Education members and administrators in new roles as it prepares for the 2022-23 school year.
