Landing Students Visit Newsday as Part of Their Journalism Curriculum

Willix - Newsday Visit

Our Landing School 5th graders recently completed a fantastic Newsday in Education field trip, which serves as a hands-on introduction to journalism for their school curriculum. We were fortunate to be selected for this interactive experience.

The students received their own Newsday badges and journalist kits (notebook and pen) and explored the inner workings of a modern newsroom:

They watched a fictitious local news video, followed by a simulated "press report" where students interviewed a staff member to practice gathering the essential Who, What, Where, When, and Why.

Students toured multimedia spaces, including a real control room, a green screen used for news and weather reports, and a podcast studio. They also observed reporters working on current news stories.

Back in the studio, the trip ended on a high note. The class created a funny "Mad Libs" news story, and a few students got to be the news anchors and read it on camera! A photobooth session let everyone look like real news reporters.

This valuable experience will be extended in the classroom, where students receive access to Newsday’s digital resources to write articles based on their learning. We are very grateful for this opportunity and will be sending thank you cards to the Newsday team!
