Deasy Second Graders Celebrate Agricultural Literacy Week with Hands-On Learning
Last week, our second-grade students at Deasy School participated in New York Agriculture in the Classroom’s 20th Annual Agricultural Literacy Week with a special visit from community volunteers. Students listened to a reading of The Pie That Molly Grew by Sue Heavenrich and discovered the journey of food from farm to table, as well as the hardworking individuals who make it all possible.
Following the story, students took part in a hands-on activity, planting their own pumpkin seeds in soil. Over the next few weeks, they will observe their plants as they grow, reinforcing their understanding of agriculture in an engaging way. The book was generously donated and will become a lasting part of our classroom library.
A special thank you to Cornell University and the Cooperative Extension of Nassau County for their collaboration and to our PTA for sponsoring this wonderful experience. We can’t wait to see how the pumpkins grow! 🌱🎃
