Deasy School Second Grader Named Finalist in Science Competition

Jada Parisi Deasy News

Congratulations to Deasy School second grader Jada Parisi, a student in Natalie Tenke's classfor being named a finalist in the Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS) Challenge at Stony Brook University! Jada took on this exciting opportunity by conducting an experiment related to dark matter, inspired by the work of scientist Vera Rubin. Her creativity, curiosity, and hard work earned her a spot among the top finalists in the competition.

The IACS Challenge, open to students in grades K-12, encourages young scientists to explore the contributions of women in STEM by conducting experiments and presenting their findings in a creative video format. Most experiments can be done with household materials, and students can participate individually or in teams. This annual competition, held in honor of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11), provides students with a platform to showcase their scientific discoveries.

After being selected as a finalist, Jada was invited to present her project at Stony Brook University on February 13, where she received a certificate of accomplishment and a special prize. She shared that her dad helped with her project and that she enjoyed watching the other students' videos. One of her favorite parts of the experience—aside from presenting her work and meeting fellow young scientists—was eating mac and cheese at the event!

Jada’s favorite subject right now is art, and she dreams of becoming a chef one day. We are so proud of her for representing Glen Cove with enthusiasm and curiosity. Congratulations, Jada!

We would also like to thank Superintendent Dr. Maria Rianna, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Alexa Doeschner, Science Coordinator Victoria Curtis, STREAM teacher Jessica McKenna, and Deasy School Principal Erin Nastri, for their support in making opportunities like this possible for our students.
