Consolee Nishimwe Inspires Glen Cove High School Students with Story of Resilience

Glen Cove High School recently welcomed back Consolee Nishimwe, a survivor of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, for a powerful visit of education and reflection. Speaking to students, Nishimwe’s visit provided a deeply personal lens through which students could view one of history’s most harrowing chapters.

The visit brought the Global History curriculum to life, with Nishimwe’s testimony offering a powerful perspective that deepened students’ understanding beyond the classroom. She recounted her three months in hiding and the immense resilience required to survive alongside her mother and sister despite unimaginable loss.

"No matter what horrible circumstances you may face in your life, never lose hope," Nishimwe shared with the captive audience. "For losing hope is the beginning of your own self-defeat."

The assembly is a cornerstone of Glen Cove’s commitment to fostering global awareness and civic responsibility. Social Studies Chairperson Tayla Plotke emphasized that such visits are essential in reminding students that history is ultimately defined by the lived experiences of individuals. Mr. Vazquez and Mr. Flores supported their students through instruction that fostered deeper understanding and reflection throughout the event.

Today, Nishimwe is recognized globally as an author, motivational speaker, and advocate for women’s rights. Her work ensures that the voices of those impacted by atrocity are never silenced.

This impactful event was made possible through the district's ongoing collaboration with Zachary Graulich and the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center of Nassau County (HMTC). By working together, the high school and the HMTC continue to provide students with firsthand perspectives on the dangers of hate and the vital importance of compassion.
