Advanced Photography Students Get A Rare Glimpse Into the World of Professional Photography

Glen Cove High School’s Advanced Photography students had a unique opportunity this fall when they visited the New York City studio of world-famous documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark. Mark, a legendary American documentary photographer, was a long time friend of GCHS video teacher and Glen Cove native Valerie Lasser. After Mrs. Lasser shared that connection with photography teacher Melissa Johnides, the idea for a visit to Mark's Soho studio came to life. With cameras in hand, Advanced Photography students and teachers spent a beautiful day photographing New York City, learning about the world of professional photography, and touring the International Center of Photography. Students were lucky enough to see original prints and contact sheets of Mark’s, and get first hand knowledge about her desire to use photography to shed light on the “un-famous”. For many students, the trip also offered their first real experience exploring New York City.
