Advanced Ceramics Students Participate in Statewide MLK Jr. Exhibition

MLK Ceramic Tiles

Students in Maria Verni’s Advanced Ceramics class at Glen Cove High School participated in the 2026 New York State Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Fine Arts and Essay Exhibition.

This annual initiative, a partnership between the NYS Education Department and the Office of General Services, invites students from across the state to reflect on Dr. King’s life and teachings. This year, our students developed a project titled "Slabs for Peace," where they translated Dr. King’s Six Principles of Nonviolence into three-dimensional ceramic tiles.

By combining technical clay-working skills with decorative symbolism, the students explored complex themes such as:

  • Nonviolence as a courageous way of life.
  • The goal of reconciliation and the "Beloved Community."
  • Choosing love over hate.

The district is proud to see our students using their artistic voices to engage with history and social justice.

The exhibition is currently live and can be viewed online at the link below.
