A World of Discovery: Glen Cove Celebrates Successful Districtwide International Night

District International Night

The Glen Cove High School gymnasium was transformed into a bustling global marketplace yesterday, March 2, as hundreds of students, families, and community members gathered for the annual Districtwide International Night.

The event, which saw a fantastic turnout, served as the official kickoff for Foreign Language Week. The evening was a vibrant testament to the rich cultural tapestry that defines the Glen Cove community.

Upon entering, students were issued "Global Passports," which they carried from station to station. Each stop represented a different nation, where Honor Society members served as "ambassadors," sharing fascinating historical facts and cultural insights. Students collected unique stamps in their passports at every table, making their "travels" official. Younger students stayed busy creating handmade souvenirs at various stops, ranging from traditional patterns to symbolic artworks. Our World Language Honor Society members prepared exhibits that brought the history of the world to life.

Inside the gym, Mr. Viera and a student worked on a live painting to document the event. Ms. Sussman led her students in teaching Salsa and Bachata steps to the guests. In another area, Mr. Norris led NYSSMA students as they sang in several world languages. Near the entrance, a student heritage video played to introduce families to the different backgrounds within the school community.

We are grateful to the Glen Cove Public Library, SAFE Glen Cove, La Fuerza, the Sons of Italy, Charles Evans Center, and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for hosting tables and supporting our community during the event.

The event was organized under the leadership of Ashley Ghiraldi, District Coordinator of World Languages (WL) and English as a New Language (ENL). Thank you to Ms. Germino and Mr. Rivera (WLHS Advisors), Mr. Barry (GCTV) for setting up the sound system and all the volunteers, students, and community partners who made this educational journey possible.
