4th Graders Explore Eye Anatomy with High School Mentors

Our 4th-grade students at Connolly and Landing Elementary Schools recently participated in an engaging, hands-on cow eye dissection led by high school students.  This collaborative experience aligned with the 4th grade science standards of structure, function and information processing. Prior to the dissection, students spent their science unit exploring how animals sensory information and process it within the brain to respond to their environment. 

They also created their own model of the eye using magnifying lenses to observe how light reflecting from objects enters the eye and allows for objects to be seen. The cow eye allowed students to see first-hand the structures of the eye that they had been learning about, delving into the intricacies of eye anatomy and function. 

The cow eye dissection took their classroom learning to the next level. It allowed students to see first-hand the structures they had previously studied, giving them a tangible look into the intricacies of eye anatomy and function. This enriching experience did more than just foster curiosity, it inspired our future scientists and built a wonderful partnership between our high school and elementary students.
