Water Safety
Dear Glen Cove Families,
The safety and well-being of our students remain a priority for the Glen Cove City School District. In accordance with New York State Education Law § 926, the District is providing families with information about drowning prevention, water safety, and safe and healthy swimming.
Drowning can occur quickly and quietly in swimming pools, lakes, oceans, bathtubs, and other areas where water is present. Families are encouraged to review the following important safety practices:
- Children should always be closely supervised around water.
- Young children should remain within arm’s reach of a responsible adult.
- No one should swim alone.
- Lifeguards and flotation devices do not replace active adult supervision.
- Individuals should use properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets when appropriate.
- Alcohol and drugs should be avoided while swimming, boating, or supervising children near water.
- Families are encouraged to learn basic swimming, water safety, first aid, and CPR skills.
Additional information and resources are available from the New York State Department of Health:

These resources include guidance concerning drowning prevention, swimming safety, boating, life jacket use, supervision, water quality, and the prevention of recreational water-related illnesses.
We encourage all families to review this important information with the members of their household.
Sincerely,
Glen Cove City School District
