About our Department
STREAM is a class where students will be doing many fun and exciting projects.
The elementary STREAM program promotes critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork while aligning with the Next Generation Science Standards, 21st Century Skills and the Common Core Learning Standards.
We encourage working together, time management, persistence, and problem solving involving real world issues. Our rules in STREAM are simple: Work hard and try your best. Work together. Respect each other and our supplies.
Each time students attend STREAM class, they will act like scientists or engineers. This means that they are going explore the world around them, work cooperatively, think critically, design, build and solve problems.
K-2 STREAM
Welcome to the K-2 STREAM webpage!
Students have STREAM class once each week. Each time they come to class, the students will act like scientists or engineers. This means they are going to explore the world around them, learn new things, work collaboratively, think critically and solve problems.
We encourage students to work together, be persistent and problem solve with real world issues within our STREAM units.
In addition to STREAM class, all of the K-2 students also receive research and enrichment lessons during the school year. These lessons are co-taught with the classroom teachers.
STREAM Units K-2
Below there is a table that contains some of our units of study. These units were created based on the New York State Science Learning and International Society for Technology in Education Standards. As technology and education are always evolving, we add to and change our programming as needed.

Life Sciences |
The students will be using their five senses to explore and observe things in nature. They will choose a tree to observe throughout the year and record seasonal changes. |
The students will learn about local birds and marine animals through research and observations. This will include discussing the animals' forms and functions, adaptations, life cycles and habitats. |
The students will learn about plants. This will include discussing the forms and functions, life cycle, studying native plants and the relationships between plants and humans. |
Earth & Space Sciences |
The students will explore the solar system. This will include observing patterns and making predictions. |
The students will learn about processes that shape the various habitats on Earth. They will complete activities and create models to showcase their learning. |

Coding & Technology |
The students will be introduced to the basics of coding and robotics. They will use block-based coding using symbols to create programs. The students will use Code.org, Bee-Bots, the Code-a-Pillar application and robots. |
The students will go deeper into coding and robotics. They will use block-based coding with text to create programs. The students will continue using Code.org, Bee-Bots, the Bee-Bot application and Ozobot Robots. |
The students will review the basic concepts of coding that they learned over the past two years. They will continue to use block-based coding with text to program on Code.org and Ozobots. The students will also be introduced to the Blue-Bot robot and Blue-Bot applications. |
Engineering & the Engineering Design Process |
The students will be introduced to the Engineering Design Process. They will complete storybook STREAM building challenges throughout the year. |
The students will go deeper into the Engineering Design Process. They will complete design challenges throughout the year. |
The students will review the Engineering Design Process and will complete an engineering design unit on pollination from the Engineering is Elementary Curriculum. |

Research |
The students will study the relationship between the Monarch Butterfly and the Milkweed Plant. They will raise butterflies in their classrooms and visit our native garden to observe the plants, caterpillars and butterflies in nature. |
The grade one students will study the Earth, Moon, Sun and Stars. They will complete investigations, do research and create models under the guidance of their STREAM and classroom teachers. |
Each of our grade two classes will study the diversity of life on Earth by focusing on a specific ecosystem. The students will learn about the land, climate, what people do for work and leisure and how humans have impacted the environment. |
3-5 STREAM

Students have STREAM class once each week. Each time they come to class, the students will act like scientists or engineers. This means they are going to explore the world around them, learn new things, work collaboratively, think critically and solve problems.

CoCoRAS The students will observe and measure the amount of rain or snow that accumulates on certain days. We share our data with scientists on CoCoRAS.org, where the scientists determine changes in amounts of water accumulation in given areas around the world. |
Project Budburst The students will observe the phenology or the life cycle plants have throughout the year. Our data is shared with scientists on the projectbudburst.com website where scientists use it to determine changes in our climate. |
eBirds The students will observe and identify local birds with the Merlin bird app, then apply their observations to the eBirds app. This information is used by eBirds scientists to determine migration patterns and bird populations. |
Coding & Robotics |
The students will continue to use code.org and block coding to advance their coding skills. Code Monkey will be introduced to students so that they can start to learn Coffee Script, Code Monkey’’s take on Java. Students will also have the opportunity to use Ozobots and applications such as lightbot and Scratch jr. |
The students will go deeper into coding and robotics. They will continue to grow as coders by resuming their learning with Code Monkey. Students will also use Dash and Dot robots. Dash and Dot |
The students will continue to use Code Monkey and will be introduced to other coding apps such as SpriteBox, Scratch and Lightbot Hour. Students will use Sphero robots |
