The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Robert M. Finley Middle School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Students are selected for membership by majority vote of a five-member principal-appointed faculty council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each spring.

Students in grades 7 & 8 who meet the criterion are eligible for membership. Each spring those students who meet this criterion will receive an invitation to complete a “Candidate Form” that provides the faculty council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service.

Eligibility Requirements:

Selection will be determined by the Faculty Advisory Committee and is based upon the Five Pillars of the National Junior Honor Society. The following indicators serve as a framework for selection that must be fulfilled:

Scholarship - must have a cumulative overall GPA of 90 or above from the “beginning of 6th grade” through the end of the 2nd quarter of the current school year.

Service - participate in at least 12 hours of community service or charitable activity outside of school within the last 6 months of receiving the candidate form (this must be documented by the unrelated service provider).

Leadership - successfully holding school offices or positions of responsibility at school (clubs).

Citizenship - must have been a member of two or more school clubs, school teams or school sponsored organizations

Character - upholding our core values of respect, responsibility, integrity and complying with school rules To evaluate a candidate’s character, the faculty council uses two forms of input:

First, school disciplinary records are reviewed. Second, chosen members of the faculty are solicited for input regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s service activities, character, and leadership.

Invitations and forms must be completed and submitted by the deadline date (actual dates to follow). Candidates must also submit an essay introducing themselves to the Faculty Committee and explaining why they wish to become a member of the NJHS. Potential candidates will be notified of their status, by mail.

Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection.
