About our Department
Our visual arts department is proud of our hard-working students. The visual arts develop students’ imagination, self-confidence, creativity, and intrinsic motivation. Through study of the arts, students gain the essentials to become leaders for the future. Students create individually and as teams. They self assess and work in groups to critique one another’s work, problem solve, and reflect. They discover creativity within themselves, appreciate the talent of others, and make connections that allow them to adapt to their rapidly changing world.
The Glen Cove School District offers students learning experiences in visual arts from Kindergarten through High School, during the school day, and after school through extra-curricular clubs and organizations. Our highly qualified, certified Visual Art teachers deliver a curriculum rich with opportunities for self-exploration and expression. We are committed to the importance of the arts in the development of well-educated citizens for our future.
We encourage you to learn about our programs and to support your children as they explore and create using their imaginations, work, commitment, and passion for learning.
Elementary
The Glen Cove Elementary Art Program is designed to reach all K-5 students and offer them a wide range of experiences and learning opportunities. While supporting the New York State Standards for the Arts, our art instruction is based on the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Children are exposed to a multitude of creative opportunities in various mediums and styles of self-expression, which are further enriched through an education in art history and the works of accomplished artists. Through the study and creation of art, we are developing important skills that can be utilized throughout life, such as creative risk-taking and problem solving. Throughout this site you will see work of the creative young artists we are so proud to have in our Glen Cove family! Check out our photo gallery below. Middle School
In our Middle School Visual Art program, our curriculum combines theory and creative applications to the study of the elements and principles of design. Students will have the opportunity to combine observation and imagination by experimenting with different media such as painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, sculpture, applied design, and technology. Through class discussion, critiques and peer evaluation students will develop a voice of self-expression, critical insight and an understanding of the visual language.
