Dear Glen Cove Families, 

With another fantastic school year officially in the books, it’s time to celebrate all the hard work and growth our students have achieved. As we head into the sunny days ahead, I want to share a quick reminder about one of the simplest and most impactful ways to keep that momentum going: summer reading. 

When kids take a break from books over the summer, they can experience what’s known as the "summer slide," losing some of the academic ground they gained during the year. The great news is that just a few minutes of daily reading acts like a workout for the brain, ensuring your child steps into their new classroom this fall feeling confident and ready to learn. 

Beyond keeping skills sharp, summer is the ultimate time for discovery. Children have the freedom to dive into whatever sparks their curiosity, whether that’s a thrilling mystery, a laugh-out-loud comic, or a deep dive into how things work. It’s all about fostering a genuine love for stories. 

To help you guide your child's summer reading journey, we have two fantastic resources right here in our community. The Glen Cove Public Library is packed with physical books, audiobooks, and digital resources, plus wonderful librarians to help your child find their next favorite author. Students who participate in the library’s Summer Reading Program: Unearth a Story, will receive special recognition at a school event next year! Also, our District Summer Reading Page has curated reading recommendations, book lists, and practical tips designed to keep your child engaged all summer long. 

Weaving reading into your summer schedule can be easy and fun. You might build a cozy reading nook, set aside 15 minutes before bed, or listen to an audiobook together on a road trip. Reading aloud as a family, no matter your child's age, is also a wonderful way to connect.
