Coaching Requirements

Thank you for your interest in the Glen Cove School District athletic program. In order to provide quality coaches for secondary school student athletes, The New York State Public High School Association has established standards required of all volunteer and paid coaches.

NYS Coaching Certification

Please note: all non-teacher coaches MUST have a valid license as per New York State coaching regulations. If you are a non-teacher coach, please review the forms and information below and direct your questions or correspondence to the Athletic Office.
 
As of July 1, 2009, all applications for coaching licenses are exclusively processed online via the website.

A Non-certified teacher, must complete the following to coach in New York State:

Fingerprinting (BOCES)
Fingerprinting clearance through NYS Education Department
Current First Aid certification (valid for 3 years)
Current CPR/AED (valid for 1 year)
Child Abuse Course. Available and on-line (fee) or NYS on-line class (free)
Violence Prevention & Intervention (SAVE) workshop. Available through BOCES and on-line
Completion of DASA Certification Training (6 hour course) in Bullying and Harassment
Completed Temporary Coaches license. Done through NYS TEACH. Renewed annually

Completion of Philosophy, Principles, and Organization of Athletics in Education course within two (2) years of initial appointment. Available through BOCES and on-line

CDC Heads Up On Line Training for Coaches.

As you may be aware the State of New York passed legislation regarding Concussion Management and Awareness. This legislation takes effect on July 1st 2012. The NYS Public High School Athletic Association has recently provided a summary of the legislation’s requirements and recommendations which is attached to this email. To comply with this legislation all coaches and teachers of Physical Education, you must complete the Center for Disease Control’s “Heads Up” online training course found here.

The course takes about 30 minutes to complete.  

  • Complete Health Science Applied to Coaching and the Theory and Techniques of Coaching (sport specific) course within three (3) years of initial appointment. Available through BOCES and on-line.
  • Teacher Coaches (excluding Physical Education) must complete the following to coach in New York State
  • Current first aid certification (valid for 3 years)
  • Current CPR/AED (valid for 1 year)
  • Completion of Philosophy, Principles, and Organization of Athletics in Education course within two (2) years of initial appointment.
    Complete Health Science Applied to Coaching and the Theory and Techniques of Coaching (sport specific) course within three (3) years of initial appointment.
