Board of Education Information

Notices for all Board of Education meetings are posted on the district website, on the community digital bulletin board at Forest Avenue and Dosoris Lane, and at the entrance to Glen Cove High School. Regular business meetings, which provide the public an opportunity to address school-related matters, generally begin at 6:00 p.m. during the school year unless otherwise noted. At times, the Board may hold an executive session. An executive session is a portion of the meeting that is closed to the public. It's a period where the board can discuss sensitive matters. When this occurs, the meeting notice will indicate that an executive session is anticipated, the expected duration of the session, and the time the public meeting will reconvene, which will be 7:00 PM.

Speaking Expectations

Public comment is intended for Glen Cove community members.
Each speaker has 3 minutes.
All comments must be delivered in a respectful manner as we model respect for our students.
Naming individuals (staff, students, or community members) is strictly prohibited.
Concerns regarding individual students or staff should be directed to building or central administration.
The Board is here to listen to your input and concerns.
The public comment period is not a discussion or Q&A session.
Please do not expect an immediate response during the meeting.
Questions and concerns may require research and consideration.
The Board or appropriate staff member will follow up at a future meeting or at the appropriate time.

The Glen Cove Board of Education shapes policy and oversees the educational program for the Glen Cove public school system. It is comprised of seven trustees who must be registered voters and have lived in Glen Cove for at least one year. Terms of office are staggered so that each year at least one board seat comes up for election. Beginning with the 2022 - 2023 school year, a student serves as a non-voting member of the Board.

BOE Mission and Goals

Mission

We are dedicated to providing all of our children with an education of the highest caliber. Our future rests in the hands of today's children. Education is the key to improving the quality of their lives.

In order to accomplish this mission:

We are committed to knowing each child as an individual and providing that child with the skills, attitudes, concepts, and knowledge needed to be a complete person.
We support responsible citizenship by reinforcing morals and values.

We will build a sense of school community through effective communication.
We will provide strong leadership, a safe environment, clear goals, high expectations, and continuous assessment.

Goals

The Board of Education for the Glen Cove City School District works in collaboration with the superintendent and exhibits a shared understanding of board roles, board operating procedures, and oversees the district through policy to ensure our mission is fully realized. Our work is focused on providing a healthy and safe learning environment where students can realize their full potential and prepare to become successful citizens within this global society.

As we work together, we continue to use self-assessment tools to monitor and improve the district as a whole. We understand that it is necessary to:

Enhance school safety and optimize security;
Review and maintain, annually, a 5-year plan for building and infrastructure needs so that it can be accomplished while ensuring that we are fiscally responsible for funds needed for future projects;
Enhance the trust within the community and strengthen collaboration with all constituent groups within the community;
Approve District Goals that ensure students realize their full potential.

District Goals | 2025-2026

Goal I - Curriculum and Instruction

Instruction Excellence

Focus: Elevating teaching and learning by embedding research-based instructional practices, leveraging data, and promoting student voice and academic language.

Goal 1: Integrating strategies for literacy across content areas.
Goal 2: Using assessment data to inform instruction.
Goal 3: Increasing student discourse and conversation.

Belonging and Wellness

Focus: Creating supportive, respectful spaces where all students and staff feel seen, valued, and capable of success.

Goal 1: Building culturally-affirming environments for our diverse learners and educators.
Goal 2: Supporting staff well-being
Goal 3: Addressing chronic absenteeism, with particular attention to subgroups.

Goal II - Business & Finance: Transparency and Accountability

Focus: To create a fiscally responsible budget for the 2026-2027 school year, as we continue to be financially accountable and educationally responsive. This is measured by:

Goal 1: Passing a fiscally responsible budget for the 2026-2027 school year in the Spring of 2026, mindful of the community, accountable in all areas of spending and meeting the needs of our students.
Goal 2: Maintaining reserves for use during the budget process to offset expenses, avoid elimination of programs and staff as well as work towards the enhancements of instructional spaces.
Goal 3: Continue to explore and advocate for additional funding streams to include: grant writing, state aid/foundation aid support and/or cultivating donors.

Goal III - Business & Finance: Health and Safety

Focus: Based on the identified needs of the District’s facilities during the current and former bond discussions, continue to prioritize and secure essential capital projects and repairs within our school buildings to create a safe, secure, environmentally-friendly learning environment while maintaining fiscal, health and safety obligations to our students and community until all items are complete:

Goal 1: Review the list of projects currently under consideration and prioritize capital projects/essential repairs still needed to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.
Goal 2: Explore and consider a Phase II project for Energy Performance.
Goal 3: Update SED 5 Year Plan to meet the needs of the District’s facilities.

Goal IV - Human Resources: Communication and Recruiting

To appropriately support all staff by enhancing and revising communication systems, resources, and training.

Goal 1: Implement the utilization of Frontline Central to provide a central hub for key personnel documents in relation to exiting, day-to-day forms, and compliance practices.
Goal 2: Review and update staff Handbooks to provide all personnel with key information outlining important district policies and practices.
Goal 3: Construct additional hiring resources to further support committee stakeholders in evaluating the most qualified candidates for a respective position.

Goal V Engagement and Partnership: Communication and Community Engagement

Focus: Strengthening student connection to school, fostering partnerships with families and the community, and prioritizing the social-emotional wellness of both students and staff.

Goal 1: Promoting community partnership
Goal 2: Engaging early childhood centers to connect Pre-K families with the district
Goal 3: Creating a Parent Center, starting online with resources for families and exploring expanding into a physical space in the future.
